de la O
Fun Facts of Movie
Loops.Expanded 2024 finalist.
de la O is an installation of several videos; a part is shown on this occasion. It is based on the consideration of the sadly popular in the past English expression “idle women”, an example of the persistence of gender stereotypes in a language. At the same time, de la O is structured on a text questioning why I apply the expression to myself, which leads from the state of idleness to that of madness.
Visually, de la O takes us through images that emerged in my mind as I considered the different applications of the word “idle”. As on other occasion, I employ the repetition of a movement –on this occasion, the turn– present not only in the images, but in all aspects of the construction of the work. The need for physical control of one’s own body in the execution of a turn and the results of its absence are a metaphor for self-control and its absence, associated with the old-fashioned and crude understanding of what we still refer to as “madness”.
